Why we exist

Turning agricultural abundance into food security

Burundi remains one of the worldโ€™s most food-insecure countries despite having fertile land and a population where nearly 80% depend on agriculture for their livelihoods. Every year, significant quantities of food are lost after harvest due to inadequate storage, limited processing facilities, poor market access and a lack of preservation technologies.

Dusangire Burundian Products (DBP) is a non-profit organisation established to address these challenges. Our ambition is to transform Burundi from a country affected by food shortages into one where agricultural abundance creates food security, employment, economic opportunity and hope.

We operate as a social enterprise: income from the sale of our products is reinvested into expanding our operations and funding community programmes.

What guides us

Mission, vision and values

๐ŸŽฏ

Our mission

To reduce hunger, eliminate food waste, improve nutrition, create employment and strengthen rural communities by transforming locally grown agricultural products into high-quality, value-added food products, while investing profits into education, health and community development.

๐Ÿ”ญ

Our vision

A hunger-free Burundi where every family has access to nutritious food, every farmer earns a fair income, and agricultural resources are transformed into lasting prosperity for future generations.

๐Ÿ’š

Our values

  • Community first
  • Integrity and transparency
  • Sustainability
  • Innovation
  • Empowerment
  • Equality
  • Environmental stewardship
  • Collaboration

The challenge

Interconnected challenges

  • Chronic hunger affecting more than half the population
  • High post-harvest food losses
  • Limited food processing industries
  • Poor storage infrastructure
  • Climate-related disasters
  • Widespread poverty
  • Youth unemployment
  • Malnutrition among children
  • Limited access to reliable markets

These challenges require sustainable, locally led solutions.

Our solution

A community-based agricultural value chain

DBP is building a community-based agricultural value chain that reduces food loss while increasing food availability throughout the year.

Instead of allowing crops to spoil after harvest, we process them into nutritious, shelf-stable products.

This benefits farmers, consumers, schools, hospitals and humanitarian organisations.

Our strategic objectives

Five priorities for Burundi

1

Reduce food waste

Solar drying, milling, food dehydration, vacuum packaging, airtight grain storage and community warehouses.

2

Improve food security

Producing affordable, nutritious foods available throughout the year: flours, peanut butter, dried fruit and vegetables, fortified foods.

3

Increase farmer income

Guaranteed purchasing agreements, fair pricing, agricultural training, improved storage, market access and cooperative development.

4

Fight child malnutrition

Fortified products made from maize, soybeans, peanuts, beans, sorghum, moringa and sweet potatoes, for schools, health centres, community nutrition programmes and emergency feeding.

5

Create rural employment

Jobs in farming, food processing, packaging, logistics, quality control, warehousing, sales, administration and community education, with special opportunities for women and young people.

On the ground

Community food processing centres

We are setting up local processing centres where farmers bring their harvests. Each centre includes grain cleaning equipment, milling machines, solar dryers, packaging equipment, storage warehouses, quality testing and farmer training facilities. These centres reduce food loss while increasing product quality and market value.

โ˜€๏ธ

Solar drying

Bananas, mangoes, pineapples, tomatoes, vegetables and fish.

๐Ÿ›ข๏ธ

Hermetic storage

Safe storage for beans, maize, sorghum and rice.

๐Ÿ˜๏ธ

Community grain banks

Village grain reserves to improve food availability during shortages and stabilise prices.

๐Ÿ†˜

Emergency food reserves

Long-term storage of essential foods for natural disasters and humanitarian emergencies.

Zero food waste

Every part of the harvest has value

  • Banana peels: livestock feed and compost
  • Peanut shells: fuel briquettes and organic fertiliser
  • Cassava peels: animal feed
  • Vegetable waste: compost and biogas
  • Maize stalks: mushroom production and livestock feed

Nothing useful should be wasted.

Education and training

Training farmers

  • Climate-smart agriculture
  • Post-harvest handling
  • Food preservation
  • Business management
  • Cooperative leadership
  • Nutrition
  • Financial literacy
  • Sustainable farming
  • Organic fertiliser production

Knowledge is one of the most valuable tools for long-term development.

Our income comes from food product sales, agricultural processing services, local retail distribution, exports, institutional contracts and school feeding programmes, as well as grants, philanthropic donations, corporate partnerships and international development funding.

๐Ÿญ

80% reinvested in our operations

Expanding processing facilities, supporting farmers, improving infrastructure, purchasing equipment and creating employment.

๐Ÿค

20% for communities

  • Education scholarships
  • School feeding programmes
  • Nutrition support for vulnerable children
  • Emergency food relief
  • Womenโ€™s empowerment initiatives
